5 Steps to Get Your A&P Certification
Meet Eligibility Requirements
Be at least 18 years old.
Read, write, and understand English.
Accumulate 30 (combined) or 18 (separate) months of hands-on experience or graduate from an FAA-approved school.
Prepare for the Written Tests
Study general, airframe, and powerplant topics using FAA-approved materials.
Practice with sample exams and review the FAA Mechanics Handbook.
Consider attending a prep course if needed.
Obtain Your Certificate
Receive your A&P certification upon passing all tests.
Ensure your certificate is properly signed and validated by the FAA.
Start your career as an A&P mechanic or continue building specialized skills.
Apply for Authorization
Submit FAA Form 8610-2 at your local FAA Flight Standards District Office (FSDO)
Provide proof of work experience or school graduation.
Receive authorization to take the A&P exams.
Pass the Written, Oral, and Practical Tests
Take and pass three written exams (General, Airframe, Powerplant).
Schedule and complete oral and practical tests with a Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME).
Pay required fees for each test.
